Georgia lawmakers struck a last-minute agreement to restrict abortions five months after a woman becomes pregnant, regardless of the underlying health conditions. The bright-line restriction bans the doctor's experience and advice. It gives Georgia government full control over a woman's body from that point forward.
The bill is sitting on the desk of Gov. Nathan Deal, who may scrawl his signature on the bill at any minute.
But our work has just begun.
Although we would love to win every legislative fight and block every bill, the difficult truth is that conservative Republicans control the General Assembly and the Governor's mansion. Because of this imbalance of power, we have to keep the heat on elected officials every day, not just during the session.
We want to make sure that when Gov. Nathan Deal signs this bad law, that he owns it fully and completely.
